Torus - High Rope
Picture
Not to get political or something. But in the “rock/metalband per capita” charts Sweden is often on the absolute top due to the immense amounts of bands, artist alike that hold the Rock/Metal spirit afloat. This is about to change. Especially during these times when musicians have to bend themselfs backward to even find the opportunity to create new pieces of art.
The UK seem to have been breeding way more bands then most European bands recently. May this been due to different looks upon the importance of nourishment in culture in a post-covid world? Perhaps.
Either way, the fact is that there have been loads and loads of great artists coming from the UK recently. Torus have been making music for quite some time, but until recently it was basicly a solo-project. A “One man-band” so to speak. This have changed with the latest song High Rope.
The stoner-rock is strong with this one. Everything from the mandatory cowbell percussion to the slightly wheezy, dried out vocals. Simple but effective guitar riffs and this makes a good example of how 70’s rock have evolved with modern semantics.
A Queens of the stone age for the 2020’s?
Maybe. The influences are surely apparent, i’ve yet to hear Torus previous works but it would be interesting to see where they go from here. I like this sound that is made famous by the previously mentioned “Queens of the stone age”, as well as most bands by the front-man Josh Homme. But when Josh have refined the sound to incorporate blues elements, modern rockabilly and some noise rock i do wonder what steps Torus will take ahead?
I do like High Rope but don’t get caught in the trap of repeating the same formula again. If not constantly re-inventing the sound one must take a large pride in the lyrics. Lets see which route they will take.

Torus - High Rope (Single Review)

Torus is a UK Desert/Stoner Rock Duo with a cool Alternative Feel to them. There new single High Rope is a mixture of early-QOTSA/Kyuss vibes with catchy Foo Fighters style vocals and poppy based lyrics. The song is quite addictive and shows a band with genuine promise. Torus easily capture the swagger of 90s Desert/Stoner Rock and match it with a modern Post-Grunge flow. The lyrics are good and brings you into Torus upbeat world. Some folks may complain that this maybe too “Poppy” to be considered Desert/Stoner Rock but I would call this song a great throwback to 90s Stoner Rock with a hard-rocking Alternative Edge. I’ve checked out the guys other music videos on YouTube and I’m impressed what the band has to offer and they have written some other excellent songs such as Hold On, The Feeling and Make You Mine which you can also check out on BandCamp as well. I’m hoping Torus have an EP or full length album coming out in the future. As
these guys have a new fan right here. So get on board with TORUS.

Torus 'High Rope'

One of few rock band that continue to release during the pandemic, aided by home recording facilities of course. The MK/NN trio run with a strong Queens/Kyuss vibe with the guitars/vocals on this, and they sound MAJESTIC. My favourite of their singles yet. Can't wait to see them back on stage back half of 2021.

Torus - High Rope

"Milton Keynes/Northampton rockers Torus have made the most of a dreadful year, releasing a series of singles and building up an active social media   presence. To round proceedings off for 2020, they've released 'High Rope', a bouncy number that simply screams out to be played to a crowd in a sweaty pub - or ultimately, perhaps somewhere bigger. The second half of the song sees Torus show off more of their stoner/doom chops - particularly while they continually drop the tempo over the last 45 seconds. 'Heaviness' isn't really the word here - but they certainly nod towards this way of playing and do so to brilliant effect. The juxtaposition between this section and the more upbeat first half show that Torus are no one-trick pony. With an abundance of single-dimensional bands who may gather a committed but exclusive sect of fans, it's refreshing for an act such as these to emerge. They cover a lot of musical ground and it's only a matter of time before people really start to take notice. This will appeal to fans of Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden as much as it will appeal to fans of Monolord and Kyuss - and even fans of the likes of Muse or Arctic Monkeys. Torus certainly have the potential to become a major player in the UK stoner scene if they continue to release output of this quality."

Torus - Make You Mine

"Tracks like this make me grateful to be writing reviews. Being hit with the sun-roasted guitar licks, covered in an earthy grit tone, this song takes you on a crunchy, stoned-out journey. Doubled vocals drone in a style reminiscent of 'There Is Nothing Left To Lose' era Foo Fighters; you can hear the carefree, laidback nature of the narrative delivery. Picture basking in the sun of the Californian desert, vultures fly overhead - you're off your tits on peyote. It's a great tune that nods to the grunge and alt-scenes of the 90's, particularly Smashing Pumpkins, Sunny Day Real Estate and Soundgarden. The best compliment I can give is it fits rather seamlessly alongside those giants. Perfect for a long drive down a scorched highway looking contemplatively out of the window.

"A dash of Stoner rock, a hint of spacerock and a dollop of fuzzed up goodness, local band Torus put on an  excellent set and drew the biggest audience of the night."
-THE INDIE SQUID - "Torus Live in Milton Keynes"
   -January 20, 2020
"Torus, a band local to my hometown of Milton Keynes consisting of Alfie Glass, Harry Quinn and Eleanor Lawrence have been making waves recently, having made it through to the next round of the Metal to the Masses contest with the ultimate goal of playing Bloodstock Festival. Then Corona hits, and their natural habitat of live venues was closed to the heavy stoner rockers. But instead of putting new music on the back burner like some bands, Torus took the opportunity to get creative and is treating us with a new E.P. all recorded and mixed by the band in lockdown.
First up we have Next Time, an unashamedly catchy heavy rock song – powerful, punchy and designed to get you moving. It’s delivered with a confidence and energy that’s infectious – I can see this becoming a fan favourite in the pits once we can get back into the live arena. Ellie, the bands’ drummer lays down some great rhythms, bringing a crispness and technicality to their sound that cuts through with refreshing clarity, yet giving enough room for Alfie & Harry to lay down their grooves. Follow opens up with a short, catchy guitar riff before stating, ‘I will follow… She’s one of a kind’ a powerful song of desire and emotions in turmoil. This song really allows Alfie’s vocals to shine, and his emotive guitar playing weaves around the solid rhythms and brings a more subtle depth of sound to the E.P. Last up we have Blurry, starting lighter in tone stating ‘I wanted love, you gave me some’ with a bit of lo-fi goodness added to the vocals we get extra texture to their sound. Lyrics are sparse but weighted with energy and power, there is some fantastic fretwork provided by Alfie – both technical and heavy, and Harry’s distorted rhythms work perfectly with Ellie’s drumming underpinning the track, making it a joy to listen to as we descend into the darkness of toxic relationships. Although Torus is a young band, they play together with a chemistry that feels like they have been performing together for much longer. I’m really excited to see where this band go once this virus has gone, they are already writing some great material and this EP is just a taste of what’s to come from the band."
